I listened to a singer songwriter on stage tonight introduce each of her songs by talking a little too long about her relationship with her father or her thoughts about global warming or her old boyfriend’s new girlfriend blah blah blah and then each time when she started the song I noticed how much more interesting I would have found it if she had not explained the whole song before playing it. Like the advice Freddie Stone gave me in my about audiences when I had that one lesson with him, he said they are smart enough to understand how well you know your work or not.
