She said “Yorkton” in the careful tone people use when reminding you of something from that other century when telephones stayed home. But right away I remembered. I played Yorkton exactly once, a country music festival with Blue Rodeo, back when country music still wore country-music clothing. She told me I was her favourite. Later, she heard I quit the band and was genuinely sad. But now in Ottawa at the Robo Lounge, in another century, after watching whatever it is I have become, she said she gets it. It only took thirty-five years and several thousand kilometres for the resignation to make artistic sense.
