hello ceiling

“I know about it, sure. What you do Bob, you come to the room early when no one’s there and you say hi to the floor and then you look at the ceiling and say ‘hello ceiling’ and do the same with the walls, ‘hi walls’. You get the picture? You become friends, you let them know you’re here.”
 
That was Sam Larkins advice/ explanation to me when I was 22 asking him if he ever got stage fright and what to do about it. It didn’t make sense to me. Over the years I carried on in my own way, but I thought about that memory recently, might be capable of seeing it from his point of view now. Earlier, never considered the idea that things inanimate might also be alive (or listening).
