after the paradiddles

Bill Kosinski, decided to follow his dreams. In September he quit his job at the gas station and flew from a small Manitoba town to Mali in Africa to work with master drummer Drisa Drogipoju. Once he got there and started doing the teacher’s exercises he became frustrated that his technique was less sophisticated than the other students. Before October he decided to quit and return to Flin Flon hoping he might get back his job at the Shell on Highway 8. While packing his bags Drisa stopped by to thank him for his efforts and commend him for leaving.  Obviously, said the master drummer, he would never be able to keep up with the other students, he was too slow. This enraged Bill and he decided to show him how wrong he was. He changed his plans again and remained and rededicated his efforts. By the spring he was the most accomplished percussionist among all the students. Then Bill asked Drisa if he meant it last year, when he told him he wasn’t good enough. The teacher played a couple paradiddles and replied,  “Everyone has a timekeeper in charge of them but the one inside you was like an upset spoiled little cockroach who likes to be in attack mode always pointing it’s fingers at the mirror and saying you are not good enough. Fortunately it was thin skinned. The best way to help you get to where you wanted to be was to insult it, let it direct it’s venom elsewhere and create the necessary space for you to move with a different beat”.
