One time a classical music teacher asked for a lesson. They could technically execute whatever we discussed but they sounded like they were playing an exercise and disconnected from the part of playing that interests me. I shared my observation but it felt as though I offended them like a line was crossed and they left soon after. A year later they asked for another lesson and when they sat down at the piano they wanted to get something off their chest, that the last time they were hurt by what I said. Then they asked for reassurance that I wouldn’t say anything critical. I said what’s the point of hiring me to talk about piano and my perspective if you also want to control me? They left. Angry that my personality was the same as it previously was like someone hadn’t learned their lesson.
