the piano enablers

There were two brothers, Carmelo and Paul who eventually owned and ran the Bloor cinema but earlier, had at least two others cinemas. They were sort of cinema owning experts back then. One was called the Roxy at St. Clair and Bathurst. An old place they restored and hired musicians, like me and Ronnie, my brother. We would perform anything on the piano for 5 minutes before the movies started. It was awesome. A guy in Winnipeg, named Brian Scharfstein had a shoe store near the Royal Albert Arms and he bought a grand piano, put it in the middle of the store. He hired me and others to play while people bought shoes. And then there were two guys who owned a restaurant in Winnipeg that stayed open until 4am each night. That was quite radical in and around 1979. They too had a piano, an upright. Even if you were only an adolescent, they’d give you free meals if you played a little. I hope all those types make a come back.
