The 4th Blue Rodeo show was in New York at CBGBs. I never played in a band before. The first shows were at the Rivoli and the Isabella Hotel where the up high Marquee said Tonight: Rock Like The Rolling Stones, Blue Rodeo. Always liked how that didn’t make any sense, probably reflected an early conversation between the Isabella booker and Greg or else made up totally in a vacuum. People were dancing at those first 3 shows but at CBGBs they stood there and watched. It felt dead and weird. Out of everyone in the band drummer Cleave had the kindest personality and was the most experienced. Many times reframed what was going on. I said I guess they don’t like us because they weren’t dancing. He said when people aren’t dancing he sees it as a different show, tries to play as best he can because they’re just trying to listen like it’s a concert. All I needed to hear.
