the compliment

Last week I couldn’t resist, Warner Music seeks to fill an A&R position. I thought this is funny since I used to be an artist on Warner Music, but it could be fun to be paid to do something I already do, instead of trying to find ways to make it happen without funds. The posting didn’t ask for a cover letter just a CV. Too bad, would have enjoyed explaining some history discovering artists and helping them. All the A&R people I’ve met, no one reminds me of John Hammond, associated with discovering Dylan, Leonard Cohen, Billie Holiday, Aretha Franklin, Bruce Springsteen. All those guys listened to recordings I would bring them, smiled and told me it wasn’t any good. Stan Kulin, the head of Warner Music telling me a year after I brought them Ron Sexsmith (and they rejected it), that I was right about Ron. The truth wasn’t “I was right it” it was you were wrong. You’re saying I was right because your American counterpart signed him. Most A & R thinking seems about finding imitations, not like what one thinks of if identified with the John Hammond school of talent scout. Got the rejection letter within 24 hours, not even worth an interview. Maybe it’s a compliment.
