Schmuel said it was interesting that the person who invents an instrument isn’t necessarily someone with expertise for playing it and probably John Coltrane and Evan Parker were more fluid than Adolphe Sax. Ruth nodded and added it’s even more curious how imitation works or how avoiding imitation works. Then she told the group that the artist in residence last winter, Gina, had a unique style and later a visiting performer from Vancouver, seemed to be imitating her. They all felt sure that was what the Vancouver musician was doing and expected Gina to be upset or concerned about her reputation. She shrugged, carried on and then they asked why she wasn’t angered about the imitator. She replied I didn’t write those songs by imitating anyone, I’m not stumped about how to keep at it but someone else, if they only imitate, probably is stuck, not my problem.
