There used to be regular arguments in music stores about the quality of the sounds of sampled instrument or else the quality of digital recording vs. analog but haven’t heard any of those in a long time, seems digital won. Even though I consider myself pretty good with Logic, Photoshop, Final Cut and After Effects, I don’t have a clue how any of it works. People try explaining it to me, referring to zeros and ones…yawn, no clue. How can the phone interpret a picture with ones and zeros? .Everything is made somehow from nature, anything humankind invented it utilized something from the Earth. Iron ore, uranium, coal. The idea of silver chloride reacting to sunlight, leading to inventors playing with ideas culminating in what became photography for a hundred years – I can understand so much more easily. Magnetic tape too. We had a dark room when I was a kid and we spliced super 8 films and later 1/4 inch tape at the Music Gallery. But the digital tools, besides using the visual interface, who knows how to see the guts of it? It’s code…ok but is there a way to see the organization of code as organic and/ or physical? It there a way to see it as originating from the Earth?
