Anthemoessa Publishing offered Dan the young songwriter a deal. It contained many sections where Dan could receive a whopping sum of money contingent upon other events happening. If for instance his song charted in the Billboard top 100 that would release a large advance. If his song was covered by a top 20 artist that too would release a large advance. Not only many “ifs” but the advances were recoupable, in essence it was like many bank loans triggered if certain events transpired. His lawyer, Mr. Kuhscheisse, tried to explain that an advance was not free money because one would have to pay it back but Dan couldn’t hear that, he heard only the sirens singing, he had no idea how many songwriters crashed on the rocks before him.
