last week i had some bird feed with me while walking through high park. a chipmunk came up close, i chickened out for fear he might hurt my palm diving in for the food and decided to spill it onto the ground instead. a couple days later i saw a guy feeding the birds and chipmunks or rather i saw him waiting with his palm full of seed and i asked him if this is unwise, if when they peck if it cuts into your skin. he asked if i knew the song teen town by weather report and i do. then he said it’s like the way pastorius veers up and down the fretboard at a velocity not usually associated with electric bass, it’s thrilling and at the same time perfectly safe. this was all i needed to hear. finally, i fed a little chipmunk, today, from my hand.
