i had a friend who had a tattoo of an ant on his arm. i think he liked being reminded to work and not complain. the borg always seemed modelled on insects. work work work. flies are drawn to shit, no two ways about it. sitting on mike pence’s head for two minutes in the vp debate. thank you fly. there was a fly loose in my house today and i was trying to catch it. in a glass jar, then transfer it to the outside. but then i realized the game of listening for the fly is a very legit improvisor’s game. a game of listening and looking. that’s twice in 24 hours i was thanking a fly. in my research and methods class today, they spoke of auto ethnography, grounded research and phenomenology. trying to figure out how i can position my research to allow the generation of the kinds of pieces i want to next make. there was an artist from japan 25 years ago who had a show where he traced an ant walking on a canvass, that seemed spectacular, like john cage making music from astronomical maps. the pieces i want to make have to do with my inner state or inner attention. how can i study myself when the thing i use with which to study is the thing i am wanting to study. might be easier to find and thank a third fly.
