Sometimes people say they are stuck, they have no ideas for a melody or they simply say how do you make up a melody? I wanted to start our conversation about melody with imitation and variation but these classes have both experienced players and lack of experience players. How can I include everyone in the discussion? Sometimes the answer is to look at the opposite. So I played them the One Note Samba and afterward asked what they thought of the melody. Two of them, obviously didn’t listen to the lyrics, complained that the melody didn’t move much.
