junkie

I noticed the online ratings of books by William S. Burroughs and chose to check out Queer which was not rated as high as Junkie and Naked Lunch. I have to admit, now I’m in the same camp as the algorithms and Queer didn’t keep my attention but I switched to Junkie instead, as far as storytelling goes, found it more compelling. Burroughs offers objective instructions how to go from A to B in addiction, recounts becoming self employed rolling passed out drunks for a living as he becomes committed to addiction. Vivid and dramatic recollections. Many books pretend to be this good but often it’s just hype, comparing the Jonas Brothers with Jeff Beck. I knew a guy that despised William Burroughs, thought of him as unclean, unethical and undermining. I always had a feeling there was something about him that might be admirable, I’m not disappointed.
