Working on stride patterns, could never swiftly play 10ths like those crazy virtuosos who cascade all around. Not in my biological cards. Oscar Peterson, Stanley Cowell, Art Tatum, Keith Jarrett… but breaking them up isn’t a bad strategy, the root with my pinky and then a 6th between the 4th finger and thumb. What amazes most is the same thing as learning language. I do these patterns in several different keys and reach a kind of heaven over how the fingers have knowledge, like an internal switch that tells the fingers automatically where to go. All I do is whisper now we are in A or now we are in E. It just knows which are the correct white notes, which are the correct black notes, like correctly placing ne and pas between the verb. It’s astounding or just a humble reminder that the conscious part of things moves through life with overrated self-importance.
