Each year in the songwriting class, students select one album to explore and later make a thirty minute presentation on what they found unique about that songwriting. Usually, I list 20 records and they select one from the list. The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill always gets scooped up right away but Randy Newman’s Sail Away or Liz Phair’s Exile From Guyville, never do. It makes me want to rejig the system or assign records instead students choosing. It also makes me wonder why I don’t want to accept statistics.
