hollywood

the gordon lightfoot doc had some interesting historical footage but it seems more about creating a legacy he would like for hollywood and i would have liked more on cathy smith, who died last year. i notice the way she is written up shows one side of a story, a side that never goes into why there are newspaper accounts of him breaking her cheekbone. isn’t that another way of saying he punched her in the face? i found the director disappointing, to make a doc about him and say he wrote sundown about her, about his jealousy and leave it there, like he’s cool and no longer jealous and moved on. history also portrayed her as though she killed john belushi but robert de niro and robin williams were at belushi’s partaking too, the same night. why no shame in the press for the guys? i sense cathy smith didn’t have anyone standing up for her and/ or didn’t have the money and power. dies on oxygen in a seniors residence without a bridal path property or a doc framing her legacy the way she might have wanted it for hollywood. makes me think of that warren zevon song the french inhaler and i’m still trying to understand the enigmatic ending “so long norman”.
