Two album presentations in one class. Sail Away by Randy Newman and Exile in Guyville by Liz Phair. My evil plan is working. I decided not to try and find records which might represent something in the world of high water marks or award ceremonies but that simply meant something big to me, since I am the person teaching what I know. I didn’t consider this line of thought the first few years, like the first music productions I did, which stink and suffer from trying to please everyone or be their friend because my first experiences with producers were far from that. Eventually realizing what can I actually do, what do I actually want to do? I think I annoyed Mani, calling myself (and everyone else) an asshole. I guess as long as he never meets any of my ex-girlfriends he will feel right about correcting me. It was a unknown risk this year, listing the particular records I did but it’s worked out splendidly and the students seem pleased or else I’m not sophisticated enough to tell they are just acting as though they loved Randy Newman, Liz Phair, Tierra Whack, The Mothers of Invention, Leonard Cohen, Kanye West and Lauryn Hill.
