co-op thoughts

Reading about Florence Ballard. She formed and named the Supremes originally the Primettes. Diana Ross didn’t like the name. The way Berry Gordy divided money was not so different than the legacies of rotten people in positions of power who came before him (and after). “The group’s records would earn each of them three-fourths of a percent of 90 percent of the suggested retail price for each record, less all taxes and packaging costs. Each would thus receive half a cent from each seventy-five-cent single sold – but all expenses would be taken out first. Under this formula, for each record that sold a million copies, each Supreme would end up receiving five thousand dollars minus her share of the costs.”, from Peter Benjaminson’s biography The Lost Supreme. So that means if a million was earned, 15k covers the three Supremes and nine hundred and eight-five thousand dollars goes to Berry Gordy. I’ve known people who think the amount of money in your bank account is a measurement of how smart you are but I’m more amazed by people in positions of power that intentionally share the money more generously, basically sharing their power. Not too many examples.

  1. You do have to (or I do) admire those who have plenty and are generous with it. And those who don’t have plenty and are generous with what they have. -Kate
