The Zoom meeting was between five students who wanted to discuss a recording project, and my advice about whether to trust the manager who approached them and offered to fund recording in exchange for owning their publishing. It isn’t a black and white thing to me, it depends mostly on whether they trust this person. But before we spoke too much they couldn’t contain their opinions about the Johnny Depp/ Amber Heard trial which ended today.
One said it was a horrible day for women, they will never be believed no matter how good their evidence but another countered that the jury had women and men and the lawyers were women and men and the judge was a woman. The second one thought the first one was reacting according to their own bias. A third one questioned how anyone could know for a fact that Amber Heard’s evidence was indisputable? Are they saying the women in the jury couldn’t help themselves from voting against her because they too are sexist? Isn’t it possible a fair trial happened and part of it is someone wins and someone loses based on the evidence and presentations of the lawyers? The first got more frustrated and said you guys are not willing to see it in its historical context. I ended up saying there is a historical context to not trusting a publishing deal, in terms of the length of it or in terms of how you can exit the agreement if you are disappointed at the same time, if you all understand what you are doing and believe it is worthwhile there is nothing to cry about.
Thanks, Hollywood.
