usual suspects

I was watching the Usual Suspects trailer. The first credit of actors is Stephen Baldwin and the last was unknown Kevin Spacey, it was 1995. I have a student named Finn, in my mind I called Finn the Finnster after Benicio del Toro’s Fenster and the amazing incoherent accent. One more unreal actor who was listed far after Stephen Baldwin though that wouldn’t be the score today. Lot of layers to that film and trying to understand who is who. There are songs that do that to me, layers I didn’t necessarily understand on first listen. I gave a student a ride from London to Toronto, he studies accounting and is from China. He said his parents expect him to do this for money. Eventually I said I teach music and that’s when he said he played piano for eight years. Specifically Chopin and so I put some on. He was grateful to hear it. He started explaining a piece I heard many times from a very different view, how the left hand is setting up the right. I never heard it that way but can’t help hearing it that way now. I also played him the Köln concerts, he had never heard of Keith Jarrett and he loved it, no surprise. While listening back to that thing I’ve heard a zillion times, I realized part of the left hand movement Jarrett is doing is a double staccato thing which I never saw so clearly. Life’s like that, sudden shifts one day when you least expect it, though I still have no idea who is Kaiser Soze for real.
