There was a presentation in the course on Berry Gordy. They mostly talked about the acts on Motown which was understandable but I wanted to steer the research towards exploring him as a music businessman because that’s the point of the course. They came close once when they discussed Marvin Gaye’s dispute over the political ramifications of releasing What’s Going On? Gaye made an ultimatum, he would quit the label if it wasn’t released. Gordy thought it too long, not commercial enough and unmusical. That is so much more worth discussing in terms of a music business predicament. Wish they knew about Florence Ballard too. A discussion about the polarization of management and the politics of the Supremes following her sexual assault would also have been great. Those for whom it all comes down to money, I do not find as interesting as those for whom it all comes down to relationships. Must remember to organize the structure differently next year, assuming the University wants a next year with me and I still like taking trains from Toronto to London with Moe Berg and Sheila Heti.
