At one point today the students took over the podium and played songs that thrill them. One young woman had to show the class how amazing Billie Eilish’s True Blue is. She was on fire about the conclusion of the lyrics that she (Billie) was still in love with someone even though they broke up. The student was so excited that songs could capture emotions like that. Her performance of being in love with the song was more interesting than the actual song. I had a fantasy where I ask the class if I could play them other examples. I put on Most of The Time by Bob Dylan or the Dusty Springfield version of I Just Don’t Know What To Do With Myself and then the class is blown away. I’m pretty sure if I tried my fantasy and if they did not share my taste, then that disappointment would totally ruin the rest of the day. So I agreed the Billie Eilish’s song is amazing. We moved on.
