I found a very long and relatively recent interview with Joe Satriani. Slowly listening to it over the week. When he was asked to quickly name top three guitarists he first unsurprisingly named Jimi Hendrix, but the next ones I would not have guessed, “off the top of my head I would really say Jimi Hendrix is my God of all time, innovator above all innovators. Everybody influenced somebody else but I still hear and rely on the pacing and the ingenuity of George Harrison and Keith Richards. I know they don’t fit with Hendrix. People expect me to say Jeff Beck and Allan Holdsworth and stuff like that but those three guys, they really laid down some stuff. Transcended their technique. These were individual human beings that somehow used their bodies to produce music that is so memorable, so solid, so adoring, so inventive all the time. I feel that every time I’m playing something in me says that’s enough and I refer back to the great things they recorded. I’m lucky that they were part of my foundation”.
