Walking in High Park thinking more on the design of Joyce Carol Oates amazing book My life as A Rat when somewhere in the bushes I heard a sax playing Fly Me to The Moon. I followed. A lone baseball capped middle aged guy playing alto. How nice. Just 40 minutes earlier I was practicing the same thing on piano. Resumed studying a jazz course taught by a very interesting online British guy who first introduced me to Barry Harris’s magic tricks. His course starts with Autumn Leaves and Fly Me to The Moon in C, F, G, Bb, Db and Ab. Eventually myself and High Park baseball guy ended up speaking. He said I guess now you can sit in with lots of people. I had not that about that. My goal is just to voice folk or pop melodies through a jazz lens if I want to. As it is now when I try I fail badly. Like the Bee Gees trying to cover Captain Beefheart. Pointless and senseless. I need this jazz workout and the British guy answers my emails, which is great. The walk resumes, thinking on how the flat 3rd diminished resolves to the 2, something I never noticed before starting this course and how Joyce Carol Oates thinks so widely about each of her character’s inner world. So much dimension. I am both at writing and music school.
