Last night a guy off the top wanted to play drums which was unusual. Presumably his first time here, I never saw him before. Sometimes people take up a lot of space at the open stage and everyone is held hostage. A person who doesn’t know when to quit or wants to set up their trio. He moved the snare and stand from the wall to the centre by the microphone where the singer-songwriters play. I wondered if he was next going to move the kick, toms and cymbals and for what purpose, just so we could listen to a solo drum kit? As it turns out he only needed the snare. In a Spanish accent he said he would play a rumba. Then the groove started while he was standing. He played fine and got more and more into it. Instantly this was amusing. He just wanted to solo on the snare and he played accents and shifted the snare on and off and used his elbow to make it speak and anyone who assumed this might be boring was amused by how wrong the were.
