A young woman played a song to the class. She wrote the music and the words. Sounded very modern. Sang over the music played back from her phone with three verses, two choruses and a bridge. This class is not made up of musicians or songwriters and they were very impressed, so was I but I could not tell what the song was about. The class meanwhile thought she was a superstar and gave her much praise which was nice. Then I asked the class the million dollar question, “what was her song about?” Crickets. I like those moments. It is part of the circle I am trying to draw, that the listener understands or at least feels like they have enough to explain something. I think she was surprised nobody had anything to say about her lyrics. It is a good lesson in a class ostensibly about studying lyrics.
