marks

One time I was asked to round off marks so if a student got 59 I should list their final mark as 60 or 58. My choice they said. It was just the 9s they were concerned about. The higher ups wanted to combat students challenging marks that end in a 9. I did as they asked and suddenly a student emailed me and said why did I change their mark? I wrote the person in charge and told them the student noticed and wanted an explanation. I volunteered to tell the student the higher ups asked me to do this and I rounded their mark off higher rather than lower. I thought the student might like hearing that but my person in charge said don’t do that. Just don’t reply is what they asked me to do. How shitty is that? Isn’t that the worst teaching? To ignore legitimate queries from students?
