There is a woman I sometimes work with who regularly treats people with hostility. I very much want to tell her what I think of her meanness but what happens Monday doesn’t exist the same way by Thursday. There is a concentration to anger that dilutes itself naturally by adding time. For me, that is the hardest thing in the world to remember, that this state isn’t staying.

But how perfect upset feelings are for writing. When you set out to write music or paint or film, being upset is an advantage. Does anything seriously important happen when you feel neutral? And then there is the snapshot value. Art that is made under certain emotional conditions is like a photograph of time and place. When you make it, it is an exorcism and when you play it, even years later, it is like time travel with the bonus that you aren’t staying .
