There was a student who tried to write about how to sustain great states of improvisation. She thought better moments only happened occasionally. So her teacher advised her to try and play detective, when it is happening, try recounting your steps, how did you get there? What were you doing or thinking? She took careful notes but found herself disappointed when reading it aloud. Putting it into words had shortcomings. So she started to replace her findings with recipes.
