because just because

Last class. Goes by fast when you’re old, slow when you’re young. The leaves on the High Park trees are all gone and you can see through the Savannah now. I’ve seen four coyotes this year. Each time they pass it’s only moments. They are on a mission and indifferent to me. They don’t even acknowledge me. That’s fine with me. Super nice walking through the trails in the dark tonight, every branch holding so much snow like someone hired a new set designer. One of my co-students is from Palm Springs, she hasn’t lived in a place with snow and is amazed by all of this. What’s not to be amazed. Makes me imagine how it could be a real thing for always-warm-climate-people to want to get away from it all and enjoy the escape of winter. Coldquest Airlines. Almost a quarter of the Phd done. Hi five to the mirror. Going to make banana bread and add it to my daughter’s lunch. I usually make her lunches and my batting average is pretty good especially since acquiring the new red plastic bento box with many compartments. While walking to school this morning, trudging through the snow, out of the blue she asked why do you like music? I said because it reminds me of life and because it makes me feel good and because I make friends with it. I said why do you? She said because just because. I hosted the open stage last night and she attends. She likes to hide behind me on Zoom and create ears on my head out of her feet to distract the other musicians trying to play their serious songs. She asks each time if she can play the piano. It’s nice to make room for her to perform, pleases me she thinks playing is pressing the keys and key signatures are secondary. She wanted to play along to Magali the other night and just did by playing shapes. I think it’ll be a cinch to explain keys later assuming she eventually hears it and wonders about it. We’ll be trudging through snow and she’ll ask why do you play in this key or that key? Because just because I might answer.
