All the meditation practices on looking at a candle or noticing your breath or chanting the name of Val Kilmer, have the same goal, trying to get mind to stop being mind. Mind’s natural state is an unending song that doesn’t notice the now as it never stops thinking other things. Trying to be in the now is a fight with the mind that resists being in the now and even if one experiences it for a moment or two, they fail as soon as realizing they stopped thought because it is another thought to think you stopped it. More interesting is the fact that the mind’s constant need to travel upside down and sideways is unending, is the ordinary state of things or put another way nobody is in control of thinking, just at the mercy of it. What’s cool about improvising is that you are sort of planted in the now, walking a different edge, hearing a different song.
