Heard the Staple singers performance of The Weight. I’ve tried to follow the lyric before but truly I can’t figure out who’s who. I do like the idea of all these characters but who exactly is crazy Chester, Annie and is it the Nazareth reference the new testament? Why did the guy say he didn’t know where he could find a bed and yet he took his hand like a friend and grinned? Who is Luke and Carmen? Some lyric sites say Annie is Fanny which is a whole other layer of question mark. The staple singers, as well as Rick Danko, Levon and RIchard Manuel sound like they know. And why/ how did Robbie Robertson pull things like that out of his ass but not really ever again? Is it a comment on the chemistry of the time and place he was in or something else?
