Listening to the interview on Bob Lefsetz’s podcast with Narada Michael Walden. My favourite parts were the way he talked about gaining entry into the world of John Mclaughlin and how while jamming with him, McLaughlin’s face was passive, with no expressions of angst. He said he never saw anyone play with so much velocity and fireworks with this relaxed face, it fucked him up trying to play along unless he closed his eyes, “I dare any musician to play with him with their eyes open” and the other thing was he recommended Jaco Pastorius to Joe Zawinul. Then they flew him to L.A. to audition for Weather Report. At first Jaco played the usual harmonics etc. he is known by, but Zawinul was annoyed. “Don’t play that bullshit over my music” and unexpectedly, the next part of Michael Walden’s story was how useful it was for Jaco’s development. That Zawinul’s authority positioned Pastorius to filter himself differently and grow further in other ways. I was surprised and enjoyed so many accounts of his life in this interview. Even though Bob Lefsetz insults Mahavishnu and says things matter of factly like nobody understood the music (which is just a comment on Lefsetz’s taste) and even though he mispronounces Jaco as Yacko, (oy) it is still an awesome interview.
