A musician with a great relationship to his instrument also had an alcohol problem. His weekly residency at The Hideout attracted a good sized audience but before the show ended he would always become very drunk and display some belligerence. Then the club owner would have to apologize and escort him to an Uber. Three music students regularly attended and one night after the final song, they sat around discussing this ethical dilemma. One said if he died from alcoholism and nobody confronts him, they would always regret never having had the wherewithal to confront him about his problem. The second said they should tell him they would buy some of his merchandise if he promised to check out an AA meeting. The third said it sounds more like the discomfort lies with the observers rather than the musician, he seemed pretty pleased with himself, no? The first two were offended by the lack compassion their third colleague displayed and they stopped inviting him to come along.
